The Cons of Sugar

Hi guys! Today in Hurumanu, we saw a video about sugar. It's highly addictive and most people love it. In this blog post, I will be answering some questions that were asked throughout the video.

What is the maximum teaspoons of sugar we should have daily? 6 teaspoons are the maximum amount of sugar you should have on a daily basis in order to stay moderately healthy.

Is it healthier to eat a whole orange than to drink a glass of orange juice? It is healthier to eat an orange because the fruit has more fibres in it and fewer teaspoons of sugar compared to juice.

What are 3 ways we can avoid eating too much sugar?

1. Don't drink fizzy drinks before eating since it makes you eat more.
2. Drink more water
3. If you are craving some type of juice, sugar-free drinks are a  good alternative.

What are 3 bad things that can happen to our bodies if we eat too much sugar?

People who eat too much sugar are at
risk of heart disease, liver disease and diabetes type 2.

Did The Crystals Work?

What crystals worked out best and why? Elisha Mae's crystal (Salt) worked out the best! Even though her crystals were formed on the stick and not the string.

After watching the videos as a class, explain how the following crystals are formed:

Type
Explanation
Salt
Salt crystals are made by sea water.  Then the salt water is put in the pond. When the sun comes out the water evaporates. Then you are left with salt.
Evaporate meaning : Liquid turns into gas.

Sugar
Sugar Cane is cut up and rolled into a thin line. Then they get the sugar cane and heat it up. The mixture turns into a sugary syrup. That is called crystallisation. Now you have sweet and dry sugar.
Snowflakes
Little particles of dust fly through the air with the help of a cold breeze. As soon as a rain droplet touches them they began to form a hexagon shape. The hexagon shape forms branches. The branches become longer and pointier as it gets closer and closer to land.

Conclusion
My crystal didn't turn out too well to be honest. Finding the proper shapes was the hardest part of all. I personally wouldn't like doing more of this work in the future.

Real Crystals?

                                    Real Crystals?

Right now we're going to make some crystals! No their not real. Well they are, but they're not the expensive kind of crystals. We have to get into a group of 3. Somehow we're in a group of 4. Elisha Mae, Risha, Shalizeh and me have decided to do one each, well nearly. Risha has already done this experiment at home that's why she decided to help us out.

I decided to do the sugar crystal.
The mixture for the sugar crystal was a wee bit complicated. You have too keep adding in sugar into the water until it doesn't dissolve anymore.

Sugar Crystals

Ratio: 1 cup sugar to 1/2 cup water

Materials

1) Cup
2) Spoon
3) Salt
4) String
5) Popsicle stick

Process

Step 1: Get your cup or glass
Step 2: Put 4 tablespoons of sugar and 1 1/2 cups water. Put it in your cup or glass and mix.
Step 3: Mix until the sugar dissolves. When the sugar has dissolved add 4 more tablespoons.
Step 4: After the sugar doesn't dissolve in the water get your popsicle stick.
Step 5: Get your string. Tie the piece of string around the popsicle.
Step 6: Now dip the popsicle in the water and leave it in the water.

Reflection
Our crystals are not done, they should be by our next Science session (Thursday). I'm really excited to see how they will turn out, I wonder if I will be able to eat mine since it's just sugar and water.

Look out for part 2 coming out on Thursday!
