Final Performance!

For our final performance this week for Hurumanu we did a Freezeframe, Chorus of Movement and an Interview. I got a bit muddled up because I thought Nevaeh said that we weren't going to do the interview anymore. But that's okay. Everyone makes mistakes.

This term being a part of Drama was pretty cool! I got to learn new things in every session. Doing performances was nerve-racking but I got through them. Performing built up my confidence, I got more confident in performing in front of others.
If you're reading this and you haven't done Drama yet, you'll enjoy some days and others...not so much.
 Anyways, here are our videos!

Forensic Science!!

Image result for forensicsForensic Science

1. Write the definition of forensic science in your own words?

Forensic science to me is all about fingerprints and investigations.
It is also about scientific tests or techniques used in connection with the detection of crime.

2. What are the 5 different things that forensic scientists do?
Look at the "What you will do" section on the careers website.
- Visit crime scenes to find evidence.
- Identify drugs found on people, in body fluids or at crime scenes.
- Train police staff in collecting evidence.
-  Identify drugs found on people, in body fluids or at crime scenes.
-  Take notes and draw sketches of crime scenes

Fingerprints

Aim: To look at the different types of fingerprints.
Materials:

  1. Human Finger
  2.    Balloon
  3.  An Inkpad

Steps

  1.   Get a human finger
  2.  Get an Inkpad
  3. Dip the human finger on the ink pad
  4. Now blow the up balloon

Record the types of fingerprints from those in your group.

Name
Fingerprint 1 (Thumb)
Fingerprint 2 (index finger)
Shreya (Me)WhorlWhorl
NevaehWhorlArch

Questions:
Do people always have the same type of fingerprint on their thumb and index finger?
I had the same. Nevaeh had a whorl on her thumb and an arch on her index finger.

What was the most common type of fingerprint in your group?
The most common type of fingerprint in my group was 'Whorl'.

Hidden fingerprints:

Aim: To learn how to lift hidden fingerprints from an object.

1. Lifting and Gathering fingerprints.

Equipment:
  1. Tape
  2.   Baby Powder
  3.   Black paper
  4. Transparent Paper
  5. Tape
  6. Any kind of brush - not a toothbrush though. One that looks similar to this
Method: Image result for forensic brush
  1. Get your transparent piece of paper
  2. Press any of your fingers against the paper and hold. Make sure not to move around because it can smudge.
  3.   Release your finger and grab your baby powder.
  4. Brush the area where your fingerprint is with the help of your brush.
  5. Throw away the access powder and grab your tape.
  6. Put tape of the area where your fingerprint is and smooth it out.
  7. Slowly peel the tape off.
  8. Put the piece of tape on the black piece of paper.

Results:
Insert a photo of your lifted fingerprints here:

Conclusion Questions:

Did you manage to lift clear fingerprints?
Yes, kind of.

What could you do to improve your results next time?
I would put more pressure on the transparent paper.

Why do you think fingerprints are useful to crime scene investigators?
Fingerprints are unique, everyone's is different. That's why phones have Fingerprint ID to log in. Police/Investigators can get the suspects to fill in their fingerprints. Then they can match the fingerprints of the suspects and the fingerprints found on the crime scene.

I loved, loved, loved this experiment! I love Forensic Science, it makes me feel like a spy/detective. Seeing the results was my favourite part because then I could focus on what I could've done better next time.

Learning Story

So far this term in Hurumanu Science we have been looking
at different types of experiments.
Our first ever experiment was the  ‘Dirty Water Experiment’.
I was excited about the experiment since it was my first ever one.
We had to get the dirty water to become clean by pouring the water into a group of sand and pebbles. According to the teacher,
my group had the clearest water.

My favourite experiment was the ‘Scones’ experiment
because we got to baking and use our own imagination.
We could use different ingredients to test out which scone was the best.
Lemonade tasted the best for me! The
Baking soda scone was the driest and the vilest.

My least favourite experiment was the ‘Crystal’ experiment.
Although the crystals were fun to make mine didn’t make any crystals.
I don’t blame it on myself or someone else because
I decided to make the sugar one and they’re the hardest ones to make.

I like experiments where you bake or when there is an explosion! My
favourite experiment (that we didn’t do this term) is
‘Elephant Toothpaste’! It’s usually more fun when there is a
big amount of mixture because then the explosion is bigger and better.

Mars Best Friend

Aim: To design and build a Mars Rover using  Lego Technics.

1. Rover facts
2. Design and make draw Rover
3. Mars facts

Research links:
Mission to Mars - NASA
Mars rover view

1. Rover facts

Why do we have each of the parts?
Fill in the table below.

Name:
Purpose:
Wheels
The Rover needs wheels to move around. It's very rocky and mountainy on Mars, so it will definitely need wheels.
Solar Panel
The Rover needs solar panels so it can regain energy with the help of the Sun. That's helped the Rover move around and do what it's supposed to do.
Laser
The Rover needs a Laser so it can detect in the distance. They are like eyes.
Camera
The Rover needs a camera so it can take photos and send them to NASA so they can figure out what it's like in Mars!
Shovel, rock pick, drill
If the Rover sees a big rock in Mars it can drill through. It can dig through the dirt with a shovel.

Mars Rover details:

2. Make a Mars Rover that has the following:
  • 6 wheels
  • 1 camera
  • 1 shovel, rock pick, at the front
  • 1 solar panel
  • 1 laser that points at the ground

( Upload a photo of your mars rover onto your blog.)

Atmosphere
  1.  The atmosphere is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and smaller amounts of argon, carbon dioxide, helium, and neon.
  2. Roughly 80% of the weight of the atmosphere is located in the troposphere, which is the layer closest to the earth.

  1. Mars atmosphere is not yet hospitable to humans
  2. Scientists think we might be able to live on Mars in the upcoming years.
Surface
  1. Smooth, Rocky, Mountainy, everything basically.
  2. Earth is the so far the only planet known to humankind that has Water.
  1. Mars surface has many holes, just like the moon.
  2. Mars surface is very dry and made up of dirt.
